Operation Smile Print E-mail
Operation Smile is a non-profit organization, dedicated to providing free reconstructive surgery to children and young adults in developing countries all over the world. From 24 November to 4 December we are proud to share that Jumana Logday in grade 11 has been invited to join the medical and nonmedical volunteers in Koforidua, Ghana in an effort to bring care to citizens who are affected by cleft lips and cleft palates.
Jumana’s Blog
My name is Jumana Logday and I am a 17-year-old, Grade 11 pupil at Bergvliet High School. I am involved in numerous clubs and societies offered at my school but the most prestigious one at the moment is none other than Operation Smile!
Since Grade 8, I have passionately been involved in Operation Smile. I admired the noble work that was being done and did not hesitate to join this selfless cause. At the beginning of this year, I was elected Chairperson of this society. Since then, I have initiated many fundraisers, such as cupcake sales, as well as bottle cap drives. The money we raise is donated to children who are in need of cleft palette/lip surgery. We were also granted the golden opportunity of having one of the patients, baby Benedict, and his mother come talk to us about their journey and how Operation Smile has assisted them.
Being offered 1 of 2 positions as the only South Africans to go on a mission to Ghana is a magical and once in a lifetime opportunity come true! As someone who has been involved with this amazing NGO for 4 years and learning about Operation Smile for so long, getting to experience this fantastic mission live and in action would be absolutely phenomenal! We will be based in the Koforidua region where we will meet the children who will be going into surgery, as well as follow up patients. During our stay, we will be witnessing the surgeries, providing emotional support to the parents as well as educating the kids about basic nutrition and healthcare. The experience gained would not only be invaluable to me to pursue my studies in the Medical Field, but I also see this as the perfect opportunity to share my adventure and raise more awareness at my school and in the community.
I would like to thank Mrs. Fiona Earl (Head of the Operation Smile Club at Bergvliet High) as well as my Sponsor and Student Coordinator for granting me the opportunity to go on this thrilling trip. I look forward to learning as much as possible from those young and old, lending a helping hand wherever I can and making the most of this exciting mission. Most of all, I cannot wait to share a smile with those kids! Thank you, Operation Smile, for continuously doing such great work. Ghana, I am ready for you!
Our Mission: To mobilize a world of generous hearts to heal children’s smiles and transform lives across the globe
