In the July holidays fifteen Bergvliet High School music students attended the World Youth Music Festival in Beijing, China It was a wonderful experience filled with rich music, sight seeing and introductions to the Chinese culture. They attended workshops were they were very fortunate to have been conducted by the great John Hoffman from whom they learnt many pearls of wisdom.

(John Hoffman was born in the U.S.A and has toured and recorded with the likes of Buddy Rich Band, the Woody Herman Orchestra, the Glen Miller Buddy. He has performed with Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Dizzy Gillespie, Sammy Davis Jnr., Shirley Bassey, Ray Charles, and other greats. He currently lectures in Jazz Studies at Qld. Conservatorium Griffith University, where he directs the renowned Conservatorium Artists.)

Bergvliet High School learners were great ambassadors for Cape Town and South Africa; they were praised for their high standard of music and most humble demeanour.

Bergvliet High School learner Richard Sturrock said “We have tasted Chinese food, experienced Chinese culture, interacted with musicians from other parts of the world and have returned from a fantastic journey where we have grown as musicians and as individuals. Thank you to everyone who made our dreams a reality.”
