In recognition of Shakespeare's birth and death World Book Day is held each year on the 23rd of April. In 2009 Bergvliet High School introduced a Battle of the Books competition on this date where neighboring high schools were invited to ‘pit their wits’ against each other by answering questions relating to literature. Last year’s winners Springfield Convent School hosted 17 teams on the 4th of May in an evening full of enthusiasm and drama.

Patsy Geach, librarian at Bergvliet said “The evening was full of excitement with the enthusiastic learners eager to win books for their school library from Exclusive Books. It was a nail bitting finish with very few points between the top 5” Bergvliet High School came out victorious with Wynberg Girls following hot on their heels in second place.
