MAINTENANCE FOREMAN / MANAGER

Bergvliet High School has a vacancy for a Foreman / Manager to be accountable and responsible for the School’s Maintenance Department. This position will be on a fixed term contract upon commencement and requires leadership
and maintenance experience for maintaining School grounds.

The purpose of this post is:
  • Supervision and accountability of maintenance staff, including time and attendance.
  • Render and oversee maintenance and associated duties throughout the School.
  • To maintain a flexible, quality service by contributing to the efficient and effective operation and environment of the School.
  • Develop routines for staff to ensure all areas of the School are maintained to a high standard and in an orderly condition.
  • Ensure that the duties prescribed for the position are completed to an acceptable standard as determined by Management.

Pre – requisites:
  • Leadership skills
  • Current / previous experience supervising/managing a maintenance team at a comparable institution
  • Previous experience of general maintenance and/or green scape work, including field management expertise eg. general sports fields and cricket pitches
  • Clear criminal record – Police Clearance Certificate or proof of application for one to be provided
  • No previous employment dismissal/disciplinary record
  • Must be in good health due to the physical requirements of the job
  • Overtime work and work during school holidays
  • Computer literacy – email, internet, Ms Office Suite
  • Own reliable transport with valid driver’s license.
Requirements:
  • A good understanding of a School’s employee Code of Conduct and Health & Safety requirements
  • Assertiveness and ability to manage a team and work well within a team
  • Working knowledge of chemical usage; using maintenance tools and machinery safely
  • Maintenance and upkeep of all buildings, grounds, facilities and equipment.
  • Accountability and ensuring that jobs are completed with efficiency and timeously
  • Must have good interpersonal skills; written and verbal communication skills in English , Afrikaans/Xhosa.
  • Ability to prioritise work and manage the time of maintenance staff effectively
  • Good interpersonal skills to communicate with a wide range of people.
  • Initiative, problem solving skills and the ability to work without supervision.
  • Ability to do stock control and order stock
  • Liaison with outside contractors
  • Be flexible to changing demands, operational requirements and hours of the post
  • Working knowledge and technical expertise of the usage of chemicals and the operation of various machinery eg. tractor, borehole pumps, motors, welding, gardening and other, etc.
Advantageous:
  • Previous driving of a tractor and field maintenance experience (general fields & cricket pitches)
  • Health & Safety Officer / certificate / experience / member of Health & Safety Committee

GENERAL MAINTENANCE WORKER

Bergvliet High School has a vacancy for a General Maintenance employee within the School’s Maintenance Department. This position will be on a fixed term contract upon commencement and requires maintenance and general experience for maintaining School grounds.

The purpose of this post is:
To provide a high standard of maintenance and associated duties throughout the School.
To maintain a flexible, quality service by contributing to the efficient and effective operation and environment of the School.
Ensure all areas of the School are cleaned and maintained to a high standard of repair and comply with Health & Safety Standards.
Ensure that the duties prescribed for the position are completed to an acceptable standard as determined by Management.

  • Current / previous experience at a School
  • Previous experience of general maintenance and/or green scape work, including the use of chemicals and using maintenance tools and machinery safely

  • Must be in good health due to the physical requirements of the job
  • Ability to work overtime and during School holidays
