ART & DESIGN

This fun, relaxed course is aimed at beginner drawers who want to expand their “portfolios” to incorporate a more 3-dimensional view of the world! You will learn the basic drawing techniques that will enable your stick figure to look like a real three dimensional person, by teaching you shading, tonal values and mark making. Visual material, pencils, paper and charcoal will be supplied for the 1st session. Thereafter requirements will be advised.

Derric is brimming with charisma and love for all things artistic and one is not only inspired by his art, for which he has received much acclaim, but by the fact that he is also an experienced lecturer and teacher. Derric will introduce you to Acrylics and Watercolours (if required) and you will be taught the techniques needed to work with each medium.  The course components will consist of the following: 

• Orientation and demonstration by the artist
• Learning to draw and paint what you want to see. 
• Translating what you see into what you want to see, using: colour; composition; texture and tonal values. 
• Finding your “signature” - completing “the blank canvas”. 

Each workshop includes visual material and demonstrations by the artist.  No previous experience is needed. Appropriate clothing should be worn.   Please bring charcoal or charcoal/soft pencils and drawing paper to the first lesson.  Other course materials will be advised at this lesson.

AutoCAD can be used for any Architectural & Engineering drawing. In this introductory course, you will cover the following topics:

• Orthographic and Sectioned Views for Machine Drawings; Dimensioning to Standards; Basic Assembly Drawings

The course fee includes an AutoCAD Hands-On Guide with a 30 day Trial version of AutoCAD 2010 Software to use as revision at home during the course.

These mysterious formations have been seen more and more all over the world, particularly in England. They occur as circles, geometric patterns and even complicated mathematical designs, and appear within hours or even minutes – but no one has come up with a satisfactory explanation so far. This talk introduces you to this exciting phenomenon, some of the theories and beliefs about their formation, and is illustrated by outstanding slides.

Birdwatching is a hobby that can involve the whole family and it encourages us to appreciate our beautiful surroundings, but novice Birdwatchers sometimes get frustrated by Bird Guidebooks which often prove to be more of a hindrance than a help. In this series of lecturers, Dalton, who is not only very knowledgeable about all aspects of birds and bird life, but is also passionate about the subject, will introduce you to the garden birds, fynbos endemics, raptors and waders found in the South-Western Cape. The lectures will be illustrated with slides and familiar calls – and he may even surprise you with a live specimen or two! No age restriction applies to this course, so bring the whole family along!

This course is so much more than practical amateur Astronomy! You will not stand outside, bored to tears, while everyone takes a turn to peep at the night sky through one telescope. Instead, you will be blown away by awesome images of the Solar system; the evolution of stars, nebula and clusters in our own Milky Way galaxy and other galaxies – images taken from large telescopes and spacecraft. Maciej is passionate about Astronomy and Cosmology and while he will explain certain scientific astronomical principles, the emphasis of the course will be on the visual enjoyment of the wonders of the Universe.

BEAUTY WORKSHOPS

Learn techniques and pressure points to release stress and tension, feel better and look younger. This course will give you an overview of skin care and how the skin ages, anti-aging tips to enhance a youthful appearance and a practical session where you will learn a quick and easy massage technique to stimulate microcirculation of the face, increase lymphatic function using lymphatic drainage techniques incorporating Shiatsu pressure points for the face and scalp, to relax and enhance wellbeing.
Wear comfortable clothing, as little make-up as possible (please bring a dampened cloth to remove excess make-up), and bring a towel & a pillow along as well. Cost of massage cream included in the price.

Learn the secrets of natural beauty. Create cosmetics using items from your garden and fridge. On this fun course, you will make a cleanser, a skin tonic, face masks, a face scrub, as well as an anti-wrinkle cream! Raid your kitchen and create you own exclusive creams and lotions! All course materials are available in kit form which needs to be purchased from Julie on the night at a cost of R70.

Learn the correct way to apply your make-up so that it enhances your features, and find out which colours suit your skin tone! You will need to bring along your own hand-held mirror, a headband, cotton buds, cotton pads, face cloth and small hand towel, tissues and brushes, as well as the following make-up: foundation, compact powder (if you use this), blusher or bronzer, light eyeshadow and a dark shade mascara, lip liner, lipstick or lip gloss and a pencil or liquid eyeliner.

BUSINESS & FINANCE

Have you ever wanted to start beading, walked into a bead shop, and not known where to begin!! This course will equip you with the knowledge to tackle most beading projects with confidence and you will use beads that are easily accessible in most beading shops. You will learn the following techniques: crimping and threading; knotting; beading with ribbon; spacing; using elastics and weaving and in the process you will make 6 different items – bracelets, necklaces, earrings and a keyring. You will have hours of fun creating items for yourself and friends! The kit for the full course, which costs R150, needs to be purchased from Shirley on the first night.

Have fun creating your own theme candles and amaze your friends and family! You will make 2 gel candles and the kit, which contains everything you will need for the course, costs R80 and needs to be bought from Charmaine on the night. Bring a small pot along to melt the gel. Example here

The tin is an ideal gift for teachers or friends, as it can be used for biscuits, photos, letters or sewing stuff. It is economical to make and can be decorated to suit the person’s personality or home décor. The kit for the workshop, which costs R45, needs to be purchased from Belinda on the night. No previous experience with mosaics is needed to create this beautiful work of art which will definitely enhance the walls of your home! You will mosaic a ceramic piece onto canvas to create a stunning 25cm x 20 cm work of art which can be viewed on registration or here. All materials required will be provided in kit form at a cost of R100. There will be a variety of kits available on the night.

In this class you will learn how to baste a quilt – prepare a quilt for quilting; learn to use your walking foot; learn the technique of starting and stopping; learn to make various patterns using your walking foot and other making tools and learn to use your darning foot to free motion by dropping your feeding dog. Numerous exercises will be done learning the technique of free motion quilting. Transferring of patterns will be demonstrated and discussed.

The kit for the class costs R70 and includes Material, batting and safety pins. An optional extra is the quilting unclip tool @ R45 or R100 for all of the above. You will need to bring your reading glasses, an oiled and service working sewing machine (it just needs to be able to sew straight lines), the darning and walking foot, a double adaptor, a ball point pen, masking tape and cotton thread (which can also be purchased on the night). Make your own stunning patchwork quilt which can be used in a cot or as a picnic mat. The quilting will be done by hand, but you will finish the quilt off with a machine. In the process of making the quilt, you will learn the following quilting techniques: English Paper Piecing technique, Patch technique; Paper Foundation Piecing, Appliqué & a demonstration of how to make bias binding. You will also learn how to square the blocks off and assemble the patchwork top together in rows, how to baste and tie the quilt and you will be shown how to do the final binding for the quilt, which you will do at home.

The kit for the course costs R350 and the various kit options can be viewed on registration. You will need to bring your reading glasses along, as well as paper and fabric scissors, cereal cardboard boxes, pins, pritt glue, a ball point pen and a ruler. View the quilt when you register, or here.

Mosaics are a very easy and cost effective way of decorating your home. In order to create this beautiful designer mirror, it is not necessary to have done any art or craft work before. In this workshop, you will create a 40 cm x 30 cm mirror. A selection of stained glass chillies, lemons and flowers will be available to choose from on the evening. These pieces will become the focal point of the mirrors. Everything that you need will be provided in kit form at a cost of R120. A sample of the mirror can be seen on registration or here.
