Representative Council of Learners

The RCL is the most prestigious body in the school. The council consists of learners from each grade who are elected through a completely democratic process by their fellow learners. The co-chairpersons of the RCL are also the Heads of the school.

The RCL represents the learners of Bergvliet High School with the aim of building unity among learners in the school. They work together with the Governing Body to address the needs of all learners in the school.

RCL representatives have the opportunity to gain valuable leadership and communication skills. It is a challenge worth accepting. Stand for something or fall for everything. Stand for the RCL.

Audio visual

We, the Audio Visual Team, play a very important role at Bergvliet High School. We contribute a great deal of our time to the school after hours to make sure that everything is running smoothly for all the various functions that are held at Bergvliet High School. There are currently 13 members and it is the custom to take in a maximum of 3 Grade 8s at the start of each year.

Sound

Sound is a very important part of the Audio Visual Team. We supply sound for Dance Shows, Fashion Shows, Assemblies, and more. We normally hire a ‘big rig’ for the shows and, as you will find out, we like to make as much noise as we can.

Lighting

Lighting, like sound, is an important function of the Audio Visual Team. Lighting tasks include patching, positioning and setting all of the lights and creating the special effects for the shows. This is a lot of fun.

We will require a maximum of 3 pupils in Grade 8 to join the team at the start of 2006. We do have an entrance test but our selection is not only based on those results. Any previous experience and your willingness to learn and co-operate with the other team members is also taken into consideration.

Bits

BITS, Bergvliet High School’s Information Technology (IT) society, has been established to provide a service to the school in the area of computing and IT in general. Based in the two computer rooms, the team provides assistance to the teacher-in-charge and is dedicated to diagnosing and providing solutions to queries generated from the pupil and staff bodies as well as ensuring that the computer rooms are run as efficiently as possible.

The team consists of both experienced computer users and enthusiastic beginners, who further their own knowledge whilst helping others along the way. The idea of having a team consisting of people with different levels of knowledge and expertise allows information-sharing within the team and is a great way to learn more about IT.

BITS is also involved in a variety of different projects and provides an ideal opportunity for keen people to exhibit and develop leadership potential.

Blood Donation

Susan van Rooyen is in charge.

The members of the blood donation committee are as follows:
Andrew Withey (Head)
Kyle Cooper
Ronnie Kellerman

Be an angel today and donate blood.

Cascades

The aim of the Cascades project is to collect food items such as sandwiches and fruit, and also money for the children of Zeekoevlei Primary, many of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds. The food items are distributed every Thursday. At the end of each year, the money is used for Christmas hampers which are taken to the children. They are always delighted with the “presents” which are often the only gifts they receive for Christmas.

Classes vie with each other to bring the largest number of contributions and a chocolate cake is awarded at the end of each term to the class that brings the greatest number of contributions.

Environment Committee

(Litter Control)

LITTER- LITTER- LITTER- LITTER- LITTER

Where has it gone? It has disappeared - into the BINS.

Wishful thinking? No, not really.

The Environment Committee works on ways of raising litter awareness in the school.

In 2004 they introduced a system for keeping the school tidy by allocating areas to different grades. Each morning, during registration, a class from each grade will tidy their grade’s area.

It is hoped that students in each grade will take ownership of their area and will object to students from other grades littering there.

Nobody likes an untidy environment, so why should we tolerate litterbugs?

First Aid

The Bergvliet High First Aiders fulfil a vital role at the school. Those who are qualified, man First Aid stations at sports events and are called upon to patch and bandage where necessary.

Anybody can join our dynamic and motivated team. Professional training takes place at the school and pupils have the opportunity to take their training to whatever level they wish (Level 1 - 4 up to Basic Ambulance Assistant).

Learners with these qualifications provide an essential service to the school and in return gain fantastic, life-long skills and experience.

Interact

Our slogan for the year is THE CHALLENGE STARTS AT HOME. We believe that we can make a difference in the world in which we live, by serving others. And so in Interact we tackle projects both in and outside the school to serve our peers, communities and country.

This year we are involved in three main projects:

  1. James House Orphanage: visiting the orphanage.
  2. Habitat for Humanity: building houses.
  3. CAFDA - Youth Programme: interacting with lesser privileged.
  4. Hospitals: visiting and comforting patients, especially children.

Along with these projects we partner with Rotary in a number of other fundraising events and service activities, serve our school at a variety of functions and go on outings into our local community.

We believe that we can make a difference in the world in which we live, by serving others. And so in Interact we tackle projects both in and outside the school to serve our peers, communities and country.

Interact meets on Wednesday during 2nd break in Mrs Naysmith's classroom. If you would like to be involved in making a difference, then come along and join Interact.

Library

Exciting things are happening in your school library.

Come and pay us a visit and check out all the new exciting books on the shelves. If you are looking for a particular book and it is not available we will try our best to get it for you.

By the end of the year all the books will be computerized so taking a book out will be easier. Researching a project? Not a problem as there are computers in the library.

Play a game of chess or stretch your brain with a game of scrabble. Come and experience the friendly vibe that is part of school life in the library.

Ms Geach with the school Librarians

Pupils can also become actively involved in the running of the library by joining the team of librarians, who do duties at breaks. They issue books, process and shelve returned books and assist pupils in the library. Prospective librarians should speak to Ms Geach in the library or Miss Harsant.
