Pavilion comes to Life as Harbour comes to BHS!

Harbour-The Kalk Bay Musical Play, completed a highly successful 4 -show season at the Pavilion recently. The enthusiastic audience of 340 (over the 4 shows) thoroughly enjoyed this delightful warm and amusing musical staged by two outstanding artists.

We hope to host Harbour again soon. In the meantime,  those wanting to get more of the same calibre of entertainment can join Bill Knight's intimate home theatre venue, the "Cottage Club", by emailing Bill at cottageclub@mweb.co.za

THE HARBOUR COMES TO BERGVLIET

If you are a Capetonian down to your roots, or want to understand a little something of what makes the people who live here so special and unique, then you have got to see Harbour-The Kalk Bay Musical.

Harbour: The Kalk Bay Musical

Bergvliet High School is thrilled to present one of Cape Town's finest musicians, Bill Knight, together with one of the cities top actors, David Muller, in Seymour Howe's Harbour:

HARBOUR: The Kalk Bay Musical
-“Lekker soos vars snoek”

Die Burger

"There's a mellow moon a-hiding behind the Harbour wall tonight, I could dance in its reflection if I could get out behind the lights”

David Muller, the flamboyant and much-loved local actor often seen at Maynardville in their annual Shakespeare productions and recently toured Southern Africa with his one-man show Imagining Einstein; triumphantly returns to the stage as  “Tommy”  in the Home-Grown Kalk Bay Musical Play “HARBOUR”  written by Seymour Howe, now brought back by Popular demand.

Muller's rollicking performance wrenches every nuance out of Howe's insightful script, presenting a slice out of the vibrant life of a local fisherman, Tommy, whose family has run the seas around the Blou-Dam (False Bay), since before the Railway line came through. Tommy leads the audience on a mystical journey from Kalk Bay to Devil's Peak, from Smitswinkel Bay to Namaqualand, sharing his simple insights into Life, Laughter and Loss, and the two Loves of his life; his faithful Boat, “Maraai KB 683”, and his not-so-faithful “goose” Maraai.

Bill Knight's passionate accompaniment on Vocals and Guitar provide an almost Ghostly counterpoint to Muller's Performance. The Play itself is woven and plaited around Knight's original Music and deeply poetical Lyrics, which are best described as Kaapse Mengsel- contemporary folk Music with a strong Cape Town flavour.

Come and Laugh and Cry, and share a little smaakie of Tommy's life, with quirky view of Cape Town culture and Music, which will be appreciated by Locals and Visitors alike.

Don't miss this delightful warm and amusing musical

"Unusual heights of sheer enjoyment” The Argus
“This evocative piece of Theatre should not be missed” Cape Times

EXTRACT FROM REVIEW IN THE CAPE ARGUS (FROM A PREVIOUS PERFORMANCE)

HARBOUR

REVIEWER: Jill Fletcher
Performer: David Muller
Music: Bill Knight

If you don't know Kalk Bay, you will by the end of this performance. Bill Knight's lyrics and David Muller's performance reek of salt air, seagulls and fishing boats, with a storyline that's touching and funny.

The two artists merge seamlessly to tell the story of Tommy the fisherman and his sweetheart, Maraai. The wide stage is hung and propped with harbour paraphernalia - a lifebuoy, a lantern, flags, a clothesline, baskets, plastic boxes. This is Tommy's (Muller's) acting area but he enjoys moving among members of the audience as well, handing them props which they are asked to use during the performance - and if they participate, he is particularly happy.

Tommy is a simple, almost toothless soul, as much part of the harbour as the sea is part of him, and although he is heavy he becomes a seagull or the wind as they become necessary to the telling of his story. He takes around with him his dog, named OB, in reality a bottle of Old Brown sherry, on a string and he knows exactly what “on the rocks” means as he sits drinking on the harbour wall after the boats have come in.

Backing him at every nuance of the story is Bill Knight on guitar and mouth organ, playing his own songs, all of which are memorable, but Harbour, Through your window, Who are the Africans? and 'n Stoffertjie Reen particularly so.

See you at the Pavilion!

INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARDS

At present the school has 23 interactive whiteboards.

The teachers have found the interactive whiteboards have had a major positive impact on their classes. There are a few quotes from the teachers’ point of view.

  • My lessons have a better flow to them
  • It has encouraged me to prepare better and be more creative
  • I can recap my previous lessons with ease
  • I feel more in control, because there is a permanent record of past lessons
  • Provides me with a broader range of tools with which to explain a concept, e.g: excel, ppt, geometers sketchpad, graphing programs
  • I have access to the best resources from around the world
  • It’s easier to get and keep the learner's attention

The pupils have also shown a positive attitude to the boards and they too have commented favourably.

  • it’s fun
  • lessons are more interesting
  • I never know what the board is going to do next–so I keep listening and watching
  • it makes it easier to understand
  • it’s good because when you fall behind then the teacher can go back to the work
  • I wish all my classes could have a whiteboard

The teachers using their interactive whiteboards are receiving on-the-job training at regular intervals or as required. They are ensuring that the other staff in their subject departments are also given the opportunity of learning and teaching with the interactive whiteboard.

PAVILION OPENING

A most pleasant and successful day was held on Sunday 5 March 2006 to celebrate the opening of our stunning new sports pavilion. We hosted various guests for a luncheon prior to the opening ceremony in which Principal Vernon Wood played tribute to Greg Sabatta, past pupil and benefactor of BHS, who both built the Pavilion and donated half its costs. The opening ceremony was followed by a most entertaining afternoon’s cricket, where the school’s First Team went down gamely by 150 runs to a celebrity side comprising great names as:

Eric Simmons – SA & WP
Dave Rundle – SA & WP
John Cummins – SA & WP
Barry Touzel – WP
Ryan Maron – WP
Robbie Dairymple – Boland
Allison Johnson -WP

Thanks to FNB, Joshua Doore, SAB, Coke and Rietvallei wines for their generous sponsorship on the day and to Les Ryan and the marketing team for putting it all together.

The Pavilion is available for hire. Contact the Marketing Office on 715 8681.

50th anniversary

Our 50th anniversary is coming up in 2007. We are planning to have a multitude of events leading up to and during this period, so do keep an eye out for some which may interest you!

We are also appealing for memorabilia, articles of interest, and information from all past years, including noteworthy achievements of all our Past Pupils and staff. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Marketing office at the school.

The times they are a-changin’

BHS, as with a number of other schools, has taken the decision to develop a more commercialised form in order to ensure our place amongst the best government high schools in South Africa. The advertisements on this website are an example of the way in which we are moving, and we are currently searching for suitable corporate partners to work with us.

The school offers a multitude of marketing opportunities to farsighted businesses, and we welcome contact from any firms wishing to explore these with us. Contact the Marketing department for more info.
