School magazine in its 48th year
The 2007/2008 edition is well under way and our aim is to have it published in May 2008.
Now in its 48th year, the magazine has proudly showcased the school’s achievements and growth and provided readers (and advertisers) with superb value over the years.
With an emphasis on the most recent Matrics, yet with content aimed at all grades and their parents, the magazine is cherished and often kept for a lifetime. Specific details of interest are: - Circulation: 1300 copies will be distributed to learners across all grades, as well as the 2004 matric classes. Approximately 45% are male and 55% female, with ages ranging from 13 to 19 years. Readership: Each magazine is read by the learners, their parents, grandparents and siblings. With an average readership of 7 per copy, the readership is +-9100 persons. The learners alone, have an annual combined estimated discretionary income of R3,0 million, whilst their extended families gross income is estimated at R200,000,000!
We dare you to write for the funkiest, trendiest and most stylish pupil magazine. De Berger is a magazine designed for the pupils and written by the pupils. At the beginning of every term we have a meeting for all those interested in writing articles, some of which include: In/Out, Song and Movie dedications, Top 5 of Bergvliet High School, interviews with bands and exchange students along with pupil messages etc. Of all the reading material in the school, there is nothing so avidly read from cover to cover than De Berger - make sure you’re a part of it and see your hard work published in Bergvliet High School’s own newspaper.
Service Opportunities
We, the Audio Visual Team, play a very important role at Bergvliet High School. We contribute a great deal of our time to the school after hours to make sure that everything is running smoothly for all the various functions that are held at Bergvliet High School. We have recently upgraded our equipment. There are currently 12 members and it is the custom to take in a maximum of 5 Grade 8s at the start of each year. Sound Sound is a very important part of the Audio Visual Team. We supply sound for Dance Shows, Fashion Shows, Assemblies, Carnivals and more. We normally hire a ‘big rig’ for the shows and, as you will find out, we like to make as much noise as we can. Lighting Lighting, like sound, is an important function of the Audio Visual Team. Lighting tasks include patching, positioning and setting all of the lights and creating the special effects for the shows. This is a lot of fun. We have recently installed a fully computerised lighting system, thanks to funding by the PTA. Filming The Audio Visual Team film most of the events that happen at the school. We film the swimming gala, sports day, prefects assemblies, major productions and all of the carnivals. We then edit the video and put some of the clips into the end of the year video which is shown to the whole school on the big screen in our school hall. Overhead Projectors (OHP’s) We are also in charge of all the OHP’s in the school. We have at least 50 OHP’s in our school and we service, repair, clean and distribute them at the beginning of every year. We will require a maximum of 5 pupils in Grade 8 to join the team at the start of 2005. We do have an entrance test but our selection is not only based on those results. Any previous experience and your willingness to learn and co-operate with the other team members is also taken into consideration.
BITS, Bergvliet High School’s Information Technology (IT) society, has been established to provide a service to the school in the area of computing and IT in general. Based in the two computer rooms, the team provides assistance to the teacher in charge and is dedicated to diagnosing and providing solutions to queries generated from the pupil and staff bodies as well as ensuring that the computer rooms are run as efficiently as possible. The team consists of both experienced computer users and enthusiastic beginners, who further their own knowledge whilst helping others along the way. The idea of having a team consisting of people with different levels of knowledge and expertise allows information sharing within the team and is a great way to learn more about IT. BITS is also involved in a variety of different projects (web site design, co-ordination of log-in lessons etc) and provides an ideal opportunity for keen people to exhibit and develop leadership potential
The committee: Philippa Colly, Matthew Cleophas and Amy Van Dyk. Mrs Roux continues to lead and inspire the team. Be an angel today and donate blood.
The aim of the Cascades project is to collect food items such as sandwiches and fruit, and also money for the children of Zeekoevlei Primary, many of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds. The food items are distributed every Thursday. At the end of each year, the money is used for Christmas hampers which are taken to the children. They are always delighted with the “presents” which are often the only gifts they receive for Christmas. Classes vie with each other to bring the largest number of contributions and a chocolate cake is awarded at the end of each term to the class that brings the greatest number of contributions. Teacher in charge: Mrs Estelle Pope
(Litter Control) LITTER- LITTER- LITTER- LITTER- LITTER Where has it gone? It has disappeared - into the BINS. Wishful thinking? No, not really. The Environment Committee works on ways of raising litter awareness in the school. Last year they introduced a system for keeping the school tidy by allocating areas to different grades. Each morning, during registration, a class from each grade will tidy their grade’s area. It is hoped that students in each grade will take ownership of their area and will object to students from other grades littering there. Nobody likes an untidy environment, so why should we tolerate litterbugs?
The Bergvliet High First Aiders fulfil a vital role at the school. Those who are qualified, man First Aid stations at sports events and are called upon to patch and bandage where necessary. Anybody can join our dynamic and motivated team. Professional training takes place at the school and pupils have the opportunity to take their training to whatever level they wish (Level 1 - 4 up to Basic Ambulance Assistant). Learners with these qualifications provide an essential service to the school and in return gain fantastic, life-long skills and experience.
Our slogan for the year is THE CHALLENGE STARTS AT HOME. We believe that we can make a difference in the world in which we live, by serving others. And so in Interact we tackle projects both in and outside of the school to serve our peers, communities and country. This year we are involved in three main projects:
- James House Orphanage: visiting the orphanage.
- Habitat for Humanity: building houses.
- CAFDA - Youth Programme: interacting with lesser privileged.
- Hospitals: visiting and comforting patients, especially children.
Along with these projects we partner with Rotary in a number of other fundraising events and service activities, serve our school at a variety of functions and go on outings into our local community. We believe that we can make a difference in the world in which we live, by serving others. And so in Interact we tackle projects both in and outside the school to serve our peers, communities and country.
Interact meets on Wednesday during 2nd break in Mrs Naysmith's classroom. If you would like to be involved in making a difference, then come along and join Interact.
We, at Bergvliet High School, are very fortunate to have such a fine library. It provides a vital service to the pupils and staff. Pupils can come and do their homework, work on their projects or read in the relaxed atmosphere of the library during breaks and after school. There are many useful resources for research projects and reference. Readers will find books to interest and entertain them. Pupils can also become actively involved in the running of the library by joining the team of librarians, who do duties at breaks. They issue books, process and shelve returned books and assist pupils in the library. Prospective librarians should speak to Mrs Schmidt in the library or Miss Harsant.
